Since crashing spectacularly in February and March, major stock market indexes have staged phenomenal rebounds over the last few months. The S&P 500 index has risen roughly 40%. Meanwhile, the FTSE 100 – the UK’s most followed index – has rebounded nearly 30%.This market rebound has no doubt been welcomed by investors. After taking a battering in February and March, most investor portfolios are now looking a great deal healthier. However, I wouldn’t relax just yet. According to the world’s top money managers, we could see another stock market crash in 2020.5G is here – and shares of this ‘sleeping giant’ could be a great way for you to potentially profit!According to one leading industry firm, the 5G boom could create a global industry worth US$12.3 TRILLION out of thin air…And if you click here we’ll show you something that could be key to unlocking 5G’s full potential…Another stock market crashWorryingly, in last month’s Bank of America fund manager survey (a survey of over 200 money managers designed to monitor investor sentiment) nearly 70% of respondents said they believe the recent stock market rise is a ‘bear market rally.’ In other words, they expect the stock market to fall again. Most fund managers don’t see a ‘V-shaped’ economic recovery from the Covid-19 crisis.“The markets are priced to perfection,” says Danny Yong, Chief Investment Officer at hedge fund Dymon Asia Capital. “The stability in equity markets does not reflect the job losses and the insolvencies ahead of us globally. I believe we will see new lows in global equity markets later this year.”Yong is not the only money manager who expects new stock market lows in the near future. For example, in a letter to investors, hedge fund Elliott Management recently wrote: “Our gut tells us that a 50 percent or deeper decline from the February top might be the ultimate path of global stock markets.”The deepest recession in modern historyIt’s not hard to see why professional money managers expect another stock market crash. The coronavirus has smashed the global economy and economic data looks bleak. In the US, more than 40m people are unemployed and analysts believe that unemployment could potentially hit 20%.Meanwhile, the Bank of England recently warned that the UK economy could shrink by 14% this year. It also said that unemployment could more than double from current levels as the coronavirus causes the deepest recession in modern history. It’s fair to say that, right now, stock markets do not reflect the economic problems ahead.Of course, stock market crashes are notoriously hard to predict.I’m not going to sell all my stocks just because some investors are bearish. However, given the enormous amount of economic uncertainty the world faces right now, I think it’s sensible to think about portfolio protection.Portfolio protectionSo, what am I doing to protect my portfolio?Well, the first thing I’m doing is making some portfolio adjustments to ensure that I’m holding the right stocks in the current environment. When I say the right stocks, I mean high-quality, resilient businesses that have attractive long-term growth prospects. If we see another stock market crash, some stocks are likely to be hit more than others. For example, in the last crash, Barclays shares fell about 60%. Meanwhile, Unilever shares fell just 22%. I’m trying to avoid stocks that could crash spectacularly.Secondly, I’m stockpiling cash. While I’ve made a handful of investments recently, I’ve also been building up my cash pile. Right now, I’m not fully invested.Keeping some cash on the sidelines will give me options in the event of another stock market crash. If share prices tank again, I’ll be ready to strike. This is a really important part of LIT’s ethos,” said President of LIT, Dr Maria Hinfelaar.“The reason that we are now moving to increase the value of our sponsorship programme to €1 million is that we want to make more scholarships available, following the highly successful rollout of our initial scholarships where we partnered with our local school, St Nessan’s (the newly named Thomond Community College).”Students from seven schools are currently studying in LIT thanks to the scholarship programme. These include: Salesian’s College, Crescent College, Colaiste Nano Nagle on Sexton Street, St Nessan’s, Desmond College in Newcastle West, Colaiste Iosaef in Kilmallock and Colaiste Chiaráin in Croom.Principal of St Nessan’s School, Eugene O’Brien explained, “This programme allows students’ aspirations to become realities. It puts Higher Education within the reach of students whose pathway is blocked by financial circumstances rather than their ability or ambition.” Limerick Ladies National Football League opener to be streamed live Billy Lee names strong Limerick side to take on Wicklow in crucial Division 3 clash Predictions on the future of learning discussed at Limerick Lifelong Learning Festival Previous articleCabaret and competition new to Limerick Literary FestivalNext articleNoonan criticised for staying at home Alan Jacqueshttp://www.limerickpost.ie Twitter Limerick’s National Camogie League double header to be streamed live last_img read more

first_imgAn edible house, built from ingredients including Yorkshire pudding, slices of bread and handmade pies, was unveiled by Deliveroo this week.A team of eight spent two months designing, cooking and building the structure, which was created to celebrate a seasonal surge in orders of “comforting” British dishes made via the app, according to the takeaway delivery service.Altogether, 960 handmade pies, 1,750 slices of bread, 25 square metres of mashed potato and four litres of gravy paint were used to construct the house, which was erected in Manchester’s Media City.Features included a Yorkshire pudding garden, curry fireplace, fish and chips door, and beans on toast tiles.Winter requests for classic dishes via the app had risen 38% on summer orders, Deliveroo said, while Yorkshire pudding, pork pies and pasties were named as the most popular items making a ‘comeback’.“It’s great to see so many regional classics being embraced by Deliveroo customers,” said Emily Kraftman, Deliveroo UK & Ireland marketing director.”The public appears to have rekindled their love for some comforting home-grown food.”last_img read more

Kliptown Youth Program helps township youth excel

first_imgThe Kliptown Youth Program also provides children with sandwiches for breakfast and warm meals in the afternoons when they are done with school. (Images: Kliptown youth Program, via Facebook)Young people living in townships are one of the most at-risk groups in the country. Their limited opportunities make pursuing a passion to live up to their potential an almost impossible dream.Thulani Madondo and his friends were those kids growing up. But instead of shrugging their shoulders and waiting for someone else to improve the world, they took action. The result is the Kliptown Youth Program (KYP). Kids living in and around Kliptown, Soweto, now have a space to learn and grow – a place that encourages them to dream of a better future.Sipho Dladla, a KYP founder and now acting deputy director, says the organisation makes up for a lack of community resources and mentors. When he and his friends were young they had no-one in their community to offer them guidance and a helping hand. So as adults, they wanted to fill that gap and play that role.“Within the community we don’t have these formal resources like your libraries, your schools or clinics within Kliptown,” Dladla says.“So it has been very difficult for us having to do school work that requires research without resources like the internet.”KYP does not exist to help the poor. Rather, Dladla says, it helps those kids who want to excel and change their lives and their community.“Within our community we have different challenges and we wanted to be the change we wanted to see within our community. So that’s the reason why we opted to initiate an organisation such as KYP.”KYP IN ACTIONKYP tackles all the aspects of developing young minds, offering programs in sport, education and nutrition. The organisation runs a tutoring program that helps school children with homework, assignments and preparation for important exams. Internet access, a luxury in their homes, is free to use at KYP.In Kliptown, poverty is everywhere. Parents struggle to pay for school fees, books and uniforms. KYP’s school fees support programme helps keep children who would otherwise drop out stay in school.Funds have been difficult to come by, but it’s not dampened the Dladla or Madondo’s spirit. They continue to do the best they can for the youth. They even stretch their limited resources to cover the fees of the most promising students who get accepted for tertiary education.“Even some of the staff members and management never got the opportunity to go to university, but we felt that even though we never got those opportunities, let’s open the doors and give those young people who come to the organisation a chance.“As long as you have an ‘I can do’ attitude, it is possible to succeed regardless of your circumstances”In Kliptown, poverty is everywhere. Parents struggle to pay for school fees, books and uniforms. KYP’s school fees support programme helps keep children who would otherwise drop out stay in school. GET INVOLVEDThe success of KYP has been largely dependent on the generosity of individuals and corporations lending a hand in covering the costs of their operations and donating their time as volunteers.Apart from the donations received from the public, the organisation is also driven by dedicated facilitators like Dladla who continue to see the value in the work they do.“When I sit down and look back at how far we have come as an organisation, to be honest with you, it brings a smile to my face,” Dladla said.To help the Kliptown Youth Program grow and reach more youth in Soweto you can have a look at the organisation’s get involved page on their website that offers details on how you can play a part bettering the lives of youth in Kliptown.PLAY YOUR PARTPlay Your Part urges you to share your story. If you or anyone you know has gone out of their way to brighten up the day for someone else, we want to know.If you have a story to tell, be it your own or that of an organisation or initiative dear to you, submit your story or video to our website and tell us how South Africa is playing a part to build a better life for all.last_img read more

Turks Caicos drops to 4 Island in the World Hotel owner sounds

first_imgFacebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppThe Turks and Caicos Islands have dropped from the number one island destination in the world, to now holding the number four spot on the popular TripAdvisor list. During a specially held luncheon at Beaches Resort Villages and Spa last week, Chairman of SRI, Gordon ‘Butch’ Stewart talked about the fall and that poor service and harassment are causing it. Stewart, while here in Provo also met with the Turks and Caicos Hotel and Tourism Association – all, Magnetic Media understands are gravely concerned with the crime on the world’s #1 beach – Grace Bay Beach. The outspoken Stewart said violators should be thrown into jail, and exposed that the Turks and Caicos leaders are not only out of touch, but literally impossible to reach. During the lunch, he talked about how he could call country leaders anywhere that his resorts are operating, and those leaders come to phone or return his call. Not so, he points out in the TCI. Magnetic Media was also informed that the Tourism Minister is equally as hard to get in a meeting. Stewart was visibly frustrated and expressed that the recent taxi driver contract issue, deserved at least a call from the Premier before he went public to side with drivers, who bid and lost the contract. Butch Stewart and his team reiterated that it was a business decision which should never have attracted a protest, media headlines or threats about going to court.
