Andre Onana eager to honour Cameroon’s rich goalkeeping heritage

first_imgBlood relations aside, Cameroon’s knack of consistently producing top goalkeepers in uncanny.“It’s something innate in this country,” laughed Onana. “On a more serious note, it’s a good question! When you look at the history of Cameroon, it’s incredible all the same. We’ve had Bell, Nkono … It’s thanks to the work put in by these people.”– Strong Ajax influence –For a former student at the Samuel Eto’o Foundation who passed through the Barcelona academy (2010-2015), the relaying of this know-how by former greats has played a decisive role in the spawning of a new generation.“I was lucky enough to work with ‘Tommy’ Nkono (goalkeeping coach at Espanyol) with whom I learned a lot of things, Fabrice as well. We did little training camps and everything. It’s normal to progress, especially when you play at the top level and you know the right people,” he said.In the national team, Onana can call on a pair of Ajax legends to continue his development in Clarence Seedorf and Patrick Kluivert. The duo were appointed Cameroon’s head coach and assistant respectively last August. With three Ajax representatives in their ranks, it begs the question whether there is a temptation for Cameroon to adopt the Dutch giants’ famous philosophy.“It’s difficult. It’s clear we want to control the game, but African football has its own realities. It’s hard to stay true to this philosophy because the state of pitches is not too favourable to that system,” said Onana.“But we will go to Egypt with our own way of playing, our ‘winner mentality’,” he added. It’s certainly proved a recipe for success in the past with Cameroon triumphing in Africa’s most prestigious competition five times, in 1984, 1988, 2000, 2002 and 2017.Share on: WhatsApp Ajax’s Cameroonian goal keeper Andre Onana catches the ball during the UEFA champions league semi final second league football match between Ajax Amsterdam and Tottenham HotspurIsmailia, Egypt | AFP |  Following in the footsteps of Joseph-Antoine Bell, Thomas Nkono and Jacques Songo’o as the latest in a line of acclaimed Cameroon goalkeepers is no minor task, but the Indomitable Lions are placing their faith in Andre Onana, one of the season’s revelations in Europe, as they bid to defend their title in Egypt.Remarkably, his season which started with Ajax last July in the second Champions League qualifying round is still not over.Throughout a campaign equally gruelling as unforgettable, Onana has experienced it all — from an epic European adventure, featuring memorable matches against Real Madrid, Juventus and Tottenham, to a league and cup double. But that’s not enough to satisfy the 23-year-old who is craving further success at the Africa Cup of Nations, as Cameroon look to defend their continental crown on July 19.“Our goal is to bring this title back to Cameroon once more,” he told AFP, ahead of his team’s opening 2-0 victory against Guinea-Bissau in Ismailia.“It’s true it’s complicated and difficult, because we’re going to play against very good teams. But I think we’re going to succeed,” he said.– ‘Something innate’ –Unlike his cousin Fabrice Ondoa, a major architect behind Cameroon’s run to the 2017 title, Onana wasn’t in Gabon, a tournament played in its traditional January and February time slot, having preferred to focus on his club.A fan favourite, Ondoa has since lost his place in goal, but he did earn the right to a song penned in his honour to celebrate his achievements.“Fabrice and me, it’s family! We’re different … I don’t need a song, the most important thing is the title, both individually and collectively,” Onana said, refusing to draw comparisons between the two stoppers.“If we bring it back to Cameroon, it will be something good for the country. Sporting victories form part of the stability of our country,” he added, with Cameroon, the original hosts of this year’s edition, stripped of the tournament last November after falling behind in preparations.last_img read more

Penny drops for Canada’s teen swim queen Oleksiak

first_imgWith the likes of Manuel, Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom, Australian Cate Campbell and American Katie Ledecky lurking in her freestyle events, Oleksiak will need to rediscover the magic, and quickly, in Korea.“I’m feeling pretty confident,” she said. “But they’ve always been tough events and it’s a big field of really competitive girls.”Oleksiak has been eclipsed since Rio by countrywoman Taylor Ruck, who scooped a record eight medals at a breakout Commonwealth Games on Australia’s Gold Coast last year, including gold in the 200m free. The 19-year-old backed that up by winning the 200m free at the Pan Pacific championships in Tokyo, venue for next year’s 2020 Olympics.“Last year definitely helped with my maturity and confidence,” said Ruck, who can no longer fly under the radar after her rapid rise in women’s swimming.“It definitely got the momentum rolling but I honestly haven’t noticed anything different. I just kind of go about my life as I usually would.”Ruck, who slurps a cheeky espresso before races, admits she has had to cut down on her screen time in the run-up to the world championships.“I’ve been deleting Instagram on and off so that’s helpful and keeps me more engaged in real life,” she grinned.“I can turn a blind eye to whatever I need to. Not paying attention to outside stuff keeps me humble, keeps me engaged and keeps me focused on what I need to do.”Share on: WhatsApp Canada’s Penny Oleksiak captured Olympic swimming gold at the tender age of 16 Canada’s Penny Oleksiak captured Olympic swimming gold at the tender age of 16Gwangju, South Korea | AFP |  Canada’s Penny Oleksiak insists she has finally left the “weirdness” of capturing Olympic swimming gold at the tender age of 16 after finally recovering from a lengthy Rio hangover.Oleksiak, who is preparing for the world championships which begin in South Korea this weekend, stunned the sport when she dead-heated American Simone Manuel in the women’s 100 metres freestyle final as a gangly schoolgirl. The Canadian also came away from Rio with a silver medal in the 100m butterfly and two relay bronzes but has struggled to replicate that form since.“It was definitely a massive learning experience,” Oleksiak told AFP after training in Gwangju.“It was just so different to what most 16-year-olds would have to deal with,” she added, attempting to explain her difficulties over the last two years.“At the same time I had normal 16-year-old things to do, so it was a lot of weird circumstances put together at once and I wasn’t expecting any of it.”However, Oleksiak has been able to compartmentalise swimming from her private life since the Olympics and maintains that the experience toughed her up.“I had to mature quickly,” said the Toronto native, set to contest the 50m butterfly and the 100 and 200m free in Gwangju.“I’m still 19, I’m a kid. But I’m always going to be grateful for what happened at the Olympics and looking back I wouldn’t change it for the world.“I don’t really put any pressure on myself and neither do my family or friends. I really don’t have any complaints with how my last three years have gone.”– Breakout year –last_img read more

United’s comeback delays City’s title party

first_img0Shares0000Chris Smalling completed an incredible United comeback to win 3-2.© AFP Ben STANSALLMANCHESTER, United Kingdom, Apr 7 – Paul Pogba spoiled Manchester City’s anticipated Premier League title party by scoring twice in two minutes as Manchester United came from 2-0 down to win a thrilling derby 3-2 on Saturday.Chris Smalling completed the comeback that looked so improbable when City were well on course to round off a resounding march towards the title by racing into a 2-0 first-half lead. Goals from captain Vincent Kompany and Ilkay Gundogan put the hosts in a commanding position, who were left to rue huge missed chances from Raheem Sterling to extend their lead.City manager Pep Guardiola added more spice to an already hotly-anticipated clash when he claimed on Friday he had been offered the chance to buy Pogba two months ago by the player’s agent Mino Raiola.Pogba has endured a desperately disappointing season having often been dropped by Jose Mourinho for United’s biggest games. But after so much criticism, Pogba showed why he was the world’s most expensive player when United splashed out £89 million to bring him back to the club from Juventus in 2016 by hauling United back into a game that looked lost at half-time.Guardiola kept his pre-match promise to prioritise Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final second leg against Liverpool with City needing to overturn a 3-0 first leg deficit.Kevin de Bruyne, a leading candidate for player of the year awards, was left on the bench alongside Gabriel Jesus and City’s all-time top goalscorer Sergio Aguero.Guardiola and Mourinho have a long-running rivalry dating back to their time in charge of Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively. Can you hear me?: Paul Pogba celebrates his two goals as United battled back to stun Man City 3-2© AFP Paul ELLISAnd the game quickly settled into the usual pattern when the two face off with City dominating possession and United happy to get plenty of men behind the ball.Yet, for all City’s possession, just like when City won 2-1 at Old Trafford in December, it was from a set-piece that United were undone.City’s Abu-Dhabi owners have splashed an estimated 878 million euros over the past decade to assemble a squad that has tilted the balance of power in Manchester from red to blue.Kompany was one the Emiratis’ first purchases, and he was a fitting scorer on what seemed destined to be a historic day.The Belgian outmuscled Smalling to power home Leroy Sane’s corner on 25 minutes.Five minutes later City doubled their lead in a style that has characterised their season as Gundogan brilliantly turned onto Sterling’s pass before slotting into the far corner.City should have been out of sight by half-time as Guardiola screamed in frustration after Sterling fired two glorious chances well over the bar.Unlike in many big games this season, Mourinho played Pogba in his favoured role on the left of a midfield three.Like the rest of his teammates, Pogba was overrun in the first 45 minutes, but came alive to slot home from Ander Herrera’s cushioned pass with his chest to get United back into the game eight minutes after the break. That goal was the first Mourinho’s men had scored away from home against top-five opposition in the Premier League all season. And they soon had two in two minutes when Alexis Sanchez picked out Pogba’s late run into the box and his header beat Ederson low to his right-hand side.City’s Champions League hopes were likely ended by conceding three times in 19 minutes at Anfield in midweek. And United took just 16 minutes to complete an incredible turnaround when Smalling capitalised on some slack City marking to turn home Sanchez’s free-kick.Guardiola threw on Aguero, Jesus and De Bruyne in an attempt to prevent just a second league defeat of the season. And City should have had a penalty when Ashley Young somehow escaped without punishment from a knee-high lunge on Aguero inside the area that sparked an bad-tempered finale.Aguero was denied by a brilliant De Gea save two minutes from time and Sterling then hit the post as United somehow held on for  famous win.0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today)last_img read more

Bucks Sterling Brown Sues Milwaukee Lawsuit Reveals Officer Mocked

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Milwaukee Bucks guard Sterling Brown filed a lawsuit Tuesday against the city of Milwaukee and its police department, claiming unlawful arrest and excessive force when officers used a stun gun on him during his arrest for a parking violation.Brown’s attorney Mark Thomsen filed the lawsuit in federal court.Brown had been talking with officers while waiting for a citation for illegally parking in a disabled spot outside a Walgreens on Jan. 26, when officers took him down because he didn’t immediately remove his hands from his pockets as ordered.Police Chief Alfonso Morales apologized to Brown last month when body-camera video of the arrest was released. Brown wasn’t charged with anything and three officers were disciplined, with suspensions ranging from two to 15 days.Eight other officers were ordered to undergo remedial training in professional communications.Video of the confrontation shows an officer approached Brown around 2 a.m. When their conversation becomes tense, the officer calls more squad cars for help and eventually eight officers are standing around Brown. One asks him to take his hands out of his pockets and a second or two later the scuffle begins. Almost immediately, an officer yells: “Taser! Taser! Taser!”According to the lawsuit, one of the officers later took to Twitter to mock Brown, saying, “Nice meeting Sterling Brown of the Milwaukee Bucks at work this morning! Lol#FearTheDeerPolice only released the body camera video of the first officer who contacted Brown. But additional body camera and squad car videos, obtained by WISN-TV, showed the moments after officers used a stun gun on Brown. In one, Brown is on the ground and handcuffed when an officer puts one of his boots on Brown’s ankle, holding it there. Brown doesn’t mention being in any discomfort but he questions the officer’s actions.“C’mon man, you’re stepping on my ankle for what?” Brown said. In response, the officer said he was trying to prevent Brown from kicking anyone.Other videos obtained by WISN-TV showed an officer talking with two colleagues seating in a squad car. They talked about how they could be perceived as racist for arresting a black Bucks player, with one saying if anything goes wrong, it “is going to be, ‘Ooh, the Milwaukee Police Department is all racist, blah, blah, blah.’”Brown told the Journal Sentinel in an interview last month that he “gave in” when police used a stun gun and that he didn’t do anything to resist because he didn’t want officers to “pull out their guns.”“I was just being smart. I just wanted to get out of the situation and get home,” he said. read more

How Hackers Could Get Around Apple Pay Security

first_img Enroll Now for Free Free Workshop | August 28: Get Better Engagement and Build Trust With Customers Now When CEO Tim Cook touted Apple’s new mobile payments service as “easy, secure and private,” he was at least partially addressing public concerns over the company’s security infrastructure in light of recent high-profile hacks. And while Apple Pay has yet to be put to a real-world test, some security experts–despite generally praising Apple’s move as a step in the right direction–have already identified some potential risks inherent in the system.”If correctly implemented it could add security benefits, but there could also be some gaping security flaws,” said Chris Carlis, a security consultant for Trustwave. “We will see how it survives the initial contact with the enemy. .. It’s not going to be a magic bullet that fixes fraud and security.”Apple didn’t go into great detail describing the security aspects of Apple Pay when they introduced it this week. But there were a few things mentioned that shed some light on how the company plans to keep users’ data safe. For starters, Apple doesn’t plan to store any of its users’ financial information on its servers or in their device. Instead, the company is using a technology called “tokenization” to identify a user for payments.Tokenization works like this: When a person adds a credit card to Passbook, instead of storing the user’s actual credit card number, another account number is generated to identify the user. This device-only account number is then stored in a new encrypted chip in the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus called the “secure element.” (The Apple Watch will also have a secure element chip that will be used to store the device account number when used with an iPhone 5, iPhone 5S and iPhone C).This is significant because the secure element is actually in the device and not stored on Apple’s servers, said Rick Dakin, CEO and chief security strategist of Coalfire, an IT data security firm.Read More Apple stock downgraded on iPhone 6, Watch concernsBecause Apple doesn’t store the credit card information, it is never shared with the merchant. So if a retailer’s system is breached, the hackers won’t have access to a user’s financial information.Given the recent hacks on major retailers, this could prove hugely beneficial. But other risks remain, experts said.”Does this help prevent a nuclear bomb? Yes. When you are talking about a Home Depot-size breach, this could help prevent damage in a large scale attack,” said Tom Pageler, chief of information security for DocuSign.”But there are going to be smaller risks. People will find ways to try and take over accounts, whether it’s by stealing a phone or using social engineering to hack an account or by getting a legitimate login.”Mobile payments have usually been done via an app or third party add-on and only a few were targeted, said Mike Park, managing consultant of Trustwave. But with this type of payment functionality built into an entire platform, every device becomes a target, Park said via email. When Apple Pay launches, researchers (and hackers) will immediately start looking for weaknesses, and there is little doubt they will find flaws, said Bob Doyle, a security consultant at Neohapsis, a security and risk management company.”Everyone wants a thinner wallet. But the flipside of this is that it makes the mobile device so much more critical than it was before,” Doyle said. “Even digital wallets will be picked.” One possible security risk could stem from Apple’s decision to place more trust in third party app developers, experts said.Companies like Target, Uber and Groupon will incorporate Apple Pay into their e-commerce apps to facilitate purchases, which is another potential security risks, Pageler said.According to Trustwave’s Global Security Report, 96 percent of the applications scanned in 2013 contained at least one security vulnerability.Apple executives also stressed during the event that the Touch ID feature found in the iPhone 5S and both models of the iPhone 6 could be used to verify payments, adding a layer of security. But since Touch ID launched in the iPhone 5S last year, there have already been experiments where the fingerprint reader was hacked. Also, given that people can access Apple Pay with an Apple Watch, which can be used with older models of the iPhone that do not have Touch ID, the fingerprint security feature is not necessary to use the payment service.”It’s still to early to tell where there are security weaknesses,” Doyle said. “The devil is always in the details. Until we see the protocols we don’t know what the vulnerabilities are.”Apple declined to comment. 4 min read This story originally appeared on CNBC September 11, 2014 This hands-on workshop will give you the tools to authentically connect with an increasingly skeptical online audience.last_img read more
