maximum number of ambulatory blood pressure readings among the medical fraternity in a single day The aim was to raise awareness about the benefits of Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM) in timely and correct diagnosis of hypertension on World Hypertension Day May 17 ABPM can help in getting a more accurate picture of a person’s blood pressure (BP) pattern in a span of 24 hours The IMA study revealed that 21per cent of the doctors surveyed had masked hypertension or isolated ambulatory hypertension In simple terms their BP readings were normal when evaluated through the conventional clinic measurement technique but high through the ABPM technique Masked hypertension is associated with an increased long-term risk of sustained hypertension and cardiovascular morbidity Additionally 56 per cent of the doctors evaluated suffered from irregular BP pattern at night making them prone to future adverse cardiac events Besides 37 per cent doctors had nocturnal hypertension which can never be diagnosed through in-clinic BP measurement Over 50 per cent physicians had uncontrolled hypertension despite taking hypertensive medicines” said Dr K K Aggarwal national president Indian Medical Association (IMA) and president of Heart Care Foundation of India (HCFI) in a statement issued today About 20000 readings were taken from 533 doctors including those of the IMA leadership spanning 33 Indian cities Dr Shashank Joshi president Hypertension Society of India said “Your doctor may suggest ABPM to find out if your blood pressure readings are higher in the clinic than at home; to see the efficacy of your medicines in controlling blood pressure throughout the day or to note whether your blood pressure increases at night Since there are no visible signs of masked hypertension it is always good to let your doctor know if you have a family history of high blood pressure” “Hypertension is one of the most common lifestyle diseases prevalent today with one in three Indian adults suffering from it” he added “The incidence of hypertension is equally high among the medical fraternity owing to high-stress levels” Dr Shah pointed out Often hypertension is misdiagnosed given the difference in blood pressure readings at home and in a clinic he added Despite hypertension affecting a large number of people very few acknowledge it Fewer among them get their blood pressure checked regularly These are some of the initial findings of a new study The study — ‘Control of Hypertension in Rural India (CHIRI) — has been funded by Global Alliance for Chronic against cutting of trees for Metro 3 (File photo) Related News The Bombay High Court on Monday directed a committee of two judges to look into grievances of residents with respect to cutting of trees to pave way for the construction of Metro 3 A city resident Kunal Birwadkar had filed an application before the court alleging that the authorities were undertaking illegal and indiscriminate felling of trees by chopping off those trees that had not been slotted to be cut for the project The application points out that trees that were to be transplanted to another spot are also being cut The court referring to a Supreme Court judgement said that a two-member committee comprising Justice Shantanu Kemkar and Justice B R Gavai has been set up by the high court to look into such grievances Refusing to hear the application a division bench of Chief Justice Manjula Chellur and Justice N M Jamdar said: “We will not interfere in the matter We have set up a committee and the court’s order on vacating the stay on felling of trees has been upheld by the Supreme Court All grievances can go to the committee” The municipal corporation’s counsel Anil Sakhare informed the court that frequent inspection is being conducted across sites where trees are to be cut and the due process of law is being followed Last month the high court had vacated the stay on felling of trees for the Colaba-Bandra-Seepz Metro 3 project stating that a balance between environment and development was needed The move came three months after the court had restrained all authorities from cutting trees after city residents had raised environmental concerns The residents had approached the Supreme Court after the stay was vacated and the apex court had upheld the high court order The high court had also directed the Yadav government must call off its move to amend the Uttar Pradesh Ministers (Salaries Allowances and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1981 The proposal cleared by the state cabinet on Wednesday is aimed at circumventing a Supreme Court directive that found allotment of government bungalows to all former chief ministers for their lifetime a “largesse” without any “element of reasonableness” This largesse provided through an executive order was in clear contravention of the UP law that insists that a CM could retain government accommodation only for a fortnight after she demits office Hence the bid to amend the law Not surprisingly political parties are silent or acquiescent on this issue At least six former chief ministers are beneficiaries of the UP government’s generosity and they belong to different political streams Incidentally one of them is India’s home minister who also lives in a state property in the national capital while two others are governors residing in palatial official residences elsewhere Why should these eminences also be provided spacious bungalows at public cost in Lucknow UP however is not an exception in being largehearted towards its former rulers Bihar and Jharkhand have a similar policy of extending the privilege of free housing to their ex-chief ministers Such privileges have been questioned in the past and in Jharkhand they were withdrawn once by the governor while the state was under president’s rule only to be restored when a popular government was sworn in The unreasonable desire for real estate at the taxpayer’s expense comes from a sense of entitlement that urgently needs to be punctured Chief ministers are paid well and on demitting office receive reasonable pension In fact this is the situation in a majority of states in India and was so in UP and Bihar as well until the 1990s The craving for freebies especially real estate is a throwback to a feudal order that thrived on patronage and privilege This model of governance has outlived its time and needs to be laid to rest That political office is seen as a means for perpetual state patronage militates against the democratic spirit especially in a country
